New to betting? Check out our in-depth guides!

Welcome to Bettingbonus.com

Welcome to BettingBonus.com, a collaboration between sports, betting and casino fans from all over the world. Our website offers multiple portals catering to the needs of different markets, but the one you are currently visiting is all about the United States of America.

Online gambling in the US is a young and recently regulated market that is still finding its place and fine-tuning its foundation. The regulation was introduced piece by piece, with more states legalising new online gambling verticals every year. From online poker in Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey back in 2013, to the introduction of online casinos in various states throughout the 2010's, to the massive expansion of online sports betting which started in 2018.

As more states are opening up with each year, online sportsbooks from all over the world are scrambling to be a part of the massive US expansion. Even American betting sites are expanding their operations and applying for licenses to operate in newly available states. Needless to say, there's a lot going on!

This is where we come in. With decades of collective experience with online gambling, our team is here to guide other US bettors through the maze that is the regulated betting industry. Our aim is to be your guides to the best possible betting experience, with a particular focus on the often confusing sports betting bonuses, promotions, campaigns and special offers.

To the uninitiated, a betting bonus might seem like a scam, and online sportsbooks in general might be looked at with sceptisism. After all, depositing money to a website asking for the last four digits of your social security number might appear dodgy. And why would they give you bonus funds essentially for free?

Our website aims to address all of these concerns and more, and hopefully welcome you into the wonderful world that is betting at online sportsbooks. When we've got your back, the odds are on your side.

How to decide on a sportsbook

Albert
Bonus & Casino Expert

When deciding on a new sportsbook, there are several factors you should keep in mind to make sure that you get the best possible experience. While we've applied our decades of experience into breaking down the sports betting bonuses you find on our site, your personal opinion might sometimes differ to ours, which is why we've narrowed it down to these most important points:

  • The Betting Bonus
Most sportsbooks offer some type of sports betting bonus, but they don't all provide true value to their customers. Things to take into consideration includes the turnover requirement, minimum odds, how much you need to deposit and how much you can potentially cash out in the end.
  • Market Coverage
The variety of betting markets and sports to bet on differs between sportsbooks. Make sure that your choice offers what you want. Some operators also offer online casino games and poker, which may be relevant to some players.
  • Betting Functions
The quality of betting functions vary a lot. Some sportsbooks offer great live streaming options and a wide array of live odds. Some don't. The quality of cash out functions and bet builders is also something to keep in mind.
  • The Service Provided
This goes both for the customer support and how the sportsbook is perceived overall. While all operators listed on our site are legal, not all excel in customer service. Knowledge, speed and service-mindedness is key to a trustworthy impression.
  • Available Payment Options
Optimally a wide range of options should be available, and at low- or no cost to the user. But first and foremost - the withdrawals have to be fast and easy to get through.

Betting Bonus - Frequently Asked Questions

We attempt to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about sportsbooks online and betting bonuses.

In what states is online gambling legal?

If you are able to legally gamble online depends on both if your state has legalised it and if the operator providing the gamling is licensed by the regulatory body of that particular state. We only list licensed and legal betting sites on our website, and you can easily filter our toplists by state to see which options you have available.

The following states allow online gambling:

  • Arizona - Sports betting
  • Arkansas - Sports betting

  • Delaware - Casino
  • District of Columbia / D.C. - Sports betting
  • Florida - Sports betting
  • Illinois - Sports betting
  • Indiana - Sports betting
  • Iowa - Sports betting
  • Kansas - Sports betting
  • Kentucky - Sports betting
  • Louisiana - Sports betting
  • Maine - Sports betting
  • Maryland - Sports betting
  • Massachusetts - Sports betting
  • Michigan - Sports betting + Casino
  • Nevada - Sports betting

  • New Jersey - Sports betting + Casino
  • New York - Sports betting
  • North Carolina - Sports betting

  • Wyoming - Sports betting
Are online sportsbooks safe?

Yes, prodivded that you select a licensed and legal operator. There are many unreliable and not trustworthy off-shore betting sites and casinos that market themselves towards US citizens. We strongly advise our users to avoid these operators. Our toplists only contain licensed and legal sportsbooks.

Why do betting sites ask for my social security number?

Many US citizens feel a bit uncomfortable with online betting sites, and the fact that most of them require you to put in the last four digits of your social security number when you sign up may seem like a scam. But it is actually for a very good reason, and helps maintain the safety of the users.

When registering at an online sportsbook or casino, users have to go through a KYC process (Know Your Customer. This routine is required by US law as a way to combat underage gambling, addiction, money laundering or fraud. It is simply a means for the operator to be 100% sure that you are in fact who you claim to be. The operators also have to report large winnings to the IRS, in order to verify where someone suddenly got a huge chunk of money from.

Putting up your social security number at a legal sportsbook or casino is standard procedure, and nothing to be concerned about, provided that the operator is legal in the US and your state. All operators listed in our toplists are licensed and legal.

What is the legal age for betting online?

The legal age is not set by federal law, and differs between different states. States may also have different age requirements for different types of gambling, such as betting, casino, poker and horse racing. A majority of states have 21+ as the general legal age, but some states have 18+.

Why do sportsbooks offer betting bonuses?

A betting bonus is a marketing campaign, rewarding a customer for selecting a particular operator. Betting sites may use them to either attract new customers or to reward loyal long-term customers for sticking around on their sportsbook instead of going to a competitor.

Sports betting bonuses are designed to give the user extra value, sometimes based on the amount they deposit or bet. Bonuses come with terms and conditions, which specify things such as minimum deposit to claim the offer, turnover requirements, minimum odds etc. These terms act as a safeguard for the operator, preventing users from simply signing up, claiming a bonus and cashing out the full amount.

There is nothing stopping users from signing up with multiple sportsbooks, and many users frequently change betting sites in order to claim new sign-up bonuses. It is however important to always read through the terms and conditions to make sure that you don't miss anything important which prevents you from cashing out in the end.

What betting offers are best for new customers?

If you're new to betting online, we would advise you to keep it simple. A No Sweat Bet, also known as a Second Chance Bet, is a great way to get started. This type of betting bonus acts as a sort of insurance in case your bet turns out to be a loss.

After claiming your Second Chance Bet bonus, simply place a bet. Make sure that your bet is qualifying by following the rules listed in the terms, such as the minimum odds and maximum bet amount. If your bet wins, you simply get the payout. If you bet loses, the sportsbook pays you back the full amount wagered and lets you go again. In other words, you receive a second chance, hence the name. The refunded amount is usually non-withdrawable, but terms and conditions may vary between sportsbooks and states.

And remember, if you're not sure about a betting bonus, you don't have to claim it. You can still sign-up, deposit, play and win after opting out from promotions and campaigns.

Which is the best sports betting bonus?

Our current favorite betting bonus, especially due to the football season, is the one offered by Fanatics. When betting a mere $10 dollars, players get back $100 dollars in FanCash, usable in their sportsbook. The promotion also offers players a chance to get up to $100 dollars in FanCash every gameday during the football season. Fanatics is also one of the most widely available sportsbooks in the country, which makes a majority of US players able to claim the offer.

Why should I trust BettingBonus.com?

BettingBonus.com is an independent comparison website, licensed to legally operate in the Unites States. Our team is made up of gamblers with decades of combined experience with sports betting, casino, poker and horse racing both inside and outside of the US.

As bettors, we know what issues other players face, and share our tips, tricks and experience with our visitors. We have no conflict of interest and no reason to pretend about anything we do. While our affiliate marketing deals mean that some operators pay us for the traffic we send their way, we do not sell our values. Our reviews and ratings of operators cannot be bought, and our opinions are not for sale.

If you want to find out more about who we are and what we do, you can visit our About Us page.

Are sportsbooks and bonuses taxed?

The IRS have a clear set of rules related to winnings from gambling, that have been in place since before the recent regulation and expansion of online gambling in the US. These rules are also applicable when playing online, which means that winnings from online betting, casino games, horse racing and lotteries is classified as taxable income.

The general rule is that winnings over $600 dollars requires users to submit a W-2G form to the IRS. This form is sent out to you by the betting site automatically when you win the required amount. With bigger wins over $5000 dollars, the sportsbook or casino may be required to withhold 28% for federal income tax. The gambling company also needs to report winnings above a certain threshhold for different types of games to the IRS. This is why sportsbooks may require your social security number upon registration, and if this has not been provided, 31% may be withheld instead.

It is possible to write off loses to a certain extent, but the deductions made can never exceed the amount that you have won. Your total gambling winnings need to be reported anually on the 21st row of form 1040. Your state, or the state in which you gambled, may also have specific tax rates and reporting requirements.

Different types of betting bonuses

Betting bonus is a generic term to describe the various promotions and offers that sportsbooks market on their websites. But within that category, there are many different types of bonuses. They work in different ways, have different rules and require different means of being converted to withdrawable cash. Below, we go through the most common types of betting bonuses and what they entail.

Bonus Bets

Bonus bets used to be called "free bets" in the past, until this was deemed misleading, as you actually have to deposit funds to claim them, making them by definition not free. But regardless of the name change, bonus bets still work the same way as they used to.

Bonus bets simply means that the player places a bet where the sportsbook provides the stake. After claiming the offer, players usually need to place a qualifying bet. After the bet has won or lost, the wagered amount is matched by the sportsbook in the form of a bonus bet credited to the player.

When the player has been credited their bonus bet, they simply select an odds they want to bet on and use the bonus bet instead of their own funds. If you lose, you lost the sportsbook's money instead of your own. If you win, you get to keep the profits, minus the bonus bets value.

When placing a qualifying bet to claim a bonus bet, there is usually a minimum and maximum amount required, as well as a minimum odds. The bonus bet itself usually also comes with a minimum odds.

No Sweat Bets / Second Chance Bets

No Sweat Bets, sometimes called Second Chance Bets, is another type of betting bonus that had to change its name. The whole concept of a No Sweat Bet is that the sportsbook pays back a lost stake, which is why they used to be referred to as "risk free bets" in the past.

A No Sweat Bet works in a similar way as a bonus bet. Players claim the offer, place a bet, and activates the offer before locking in the slip. If it's a win, the player keeps the profit. If it was a loss, the sportsbook pays back the wagered amount in the form of a non-withdrawable No Sweat Bet, and the player can have another go at it. No sweat!

There are no “risk free” bets

You may have noticied that sportsbooks no longer market "risk free bet" bonuses. This type of marketing was ruled as misleading, as betting using real money always comes with a risk of losing. For this reason, online sportsbooks had to rebrand their "risk free" bonuses, and nowadays call them No Sweat Bets or Second Chance Bets instead. They still work the same way as before, it's just the name that's changed.

The same goes for "free bets", which nowadays go by bonus bets. As players are required to make a deposit and make a qualifying bet in order to claim the bonus bet, they are by definition not free, and may no longer be refered to as such.

Betting Promotions and Promo Codes

The calendar year is full of massive sports events, and during these seasons, sportsbooks often offer exclusive betting promotions for new- and existing customers alike. Especially peak events such as the Super Bowl, March Madness, World Series, NBA finals and Stanley Cup finals offer great opportunities to find a promo.

Betting promotions are often claimed by using special sportsbook promo codes given out by the betting site. While at the campaign page or when making a deposit, look for a text field where players enter their bonus code to claim the offer. Sometimes only new customers are eligible to use promotion codes.

Bet Get Bonus Promotions

A Bet/Get promotion is about as clear-cut as it gets. Bet something to get something. Usually the amount you receive is significantly larger the the amount you have to bet, such as bet $5 to get $100, or bet $10 to get $200. The outcome of your bet is not a deciding factor in whether you get your bonus or not, simply bet and get. Get Bet bonuses are most commonly given out to new customers at a sportsbook.

Sports Betting Deposit Bonuses

A sportsbook deposit bonus reward players, often new customers, with additional bonus cash when they make a deposit. It's common for 100% of the amount deposited to be matched by the sportsbook, which is why they are also sometimes called matched deposit bonuses.

Deposit bonuses usually have a higher ceiling than other types of betting bonuses, and players are free to bet them on whichever odds they want. For that reason, the turnover requirement is also significantly higher. The clear advantage is a much bigger freedom with regards to what to bet on, and how. Deposit bonuses usually come with a minimum odds.

Odds Boost

An odds boost, also known as profit boost, takes an existing odds and boosts it to a much more profitable level. Boosts come in various shapes and forms. Many sportsbooks offer daily boosts and extra boosts on popular events. Some operators spice it up by offering massive boosts as an alternative to a welcome offer. Regardless of which type we're talking about, an odds boost is a great way to make a somewhat predictable game a lot more exciting, and the stakes even higher.

Sports Betting Sign-up Bonuses

A sports betting sign-up bonus isn't really a specific type of bonus in the same sense as the other examples on this list. This type of offer is specifically targeted to new customers and is only available when signing up and make your very first deposit. Usually sign-up bonuses are bigger and more generous than the ones offered to existing customers. A sign-up bonus can basically mean any type of bonus mentioned in this list.

Sportsbook referral bonus: Refer-a-friend

Word of mouth is invaluable, and sportsbooks are very much aware of this. This is why many of them offer a referral bonus to players who refer a friend to their sportsbook. Refer-a-friend bonuses are a great way for players who have already claimed all available promotions to keep getting rewarded by their betting site. In most cases, both the referrer and the referee end up benefiting. Claiming a referral bonus usually means getting a referral link from your sportsbook and your friend using it to sign up and make a deposit.

Are betting bonuses withdrawable?

No, it's not possible to claim a betting bonus and then withdraw it. This is prevented by a turnover requirement, aka wagering requirement, that states how many times you need to bet the bonus funds in the sportsbook before they are converted into withdrawable cash. After the turnover requirement has been met, the bonus money on the account will be converted into withdrawable cash unless otherwise specified in the terms and conditions.

How do I withdraw my winnings?

Here, we’ll walk you through a few simple steps to make a withdrawal from a sportsbook. Keep in mind that every sportsbook is slightly different, with unique steps or names for their tabs and sections. However, the process is generally quite similar across the board. Our goal is to provide an easy-to-follow guide that works no matter which sportsbook you’re using.

1
Go to Your Profile or Banking Section

Once you’re logged into your account, you’ll typically find your profile or balance displayed somewhere on the site, often in the top-right corner. From there, you can either go straight to the deposit/withdrawal page or access your profile and click through to the withdrawal section.

2
Navigate to the Withdrawal Page

When you reach the withdrawal page, you’ll usually see a field where you can enter the amount you want to withdraw. Keep in mind that you can only withdraw the available balance in your account - funds tied to a bonus are typically locked and can’t be withdrawn. Most sportsbooks also have a minimum withdrawal limit, usually between $5 and $10. In many cases, you won’t get to choose your withdrawal method, it will automatically default to the same method you used for your deposit.

3
Request Your Withdrawal

Enter the exact amount you want to withdraw in the provided field and click the withdrawal button. How long it takes for the money to reach you depends on the payment method you’re using. Different methods have different processing times, ranging from a few minutes to a few days. Once you’ve submitted your request, you’re all set - just wait for your funds to arrive!

Terms and conditions - The fine print

Certain terms and conditions are applied when playing at a sportsbook or claiming a betting bonus. You approve of the general T&C's when creating your account, and the bonus terms when you decide to claim a welcome offer or promotion. We always recommend our visitors to read the T&C's, but these can be quite long and wordy. Here are some of the most important terms that we recommend looking into before signing up.

Important Terms & Conditions for a sports betting bonus

  • Turnover / Wagering Requirements:
The wagering requirement, sometimes called turnover, is what prevents players from being able to claim a bonus and just cashing out right away. The specify how many times you need to wager the bonus amount before it becomes withdrawable. For example, if you claim a $100 dollar betting bonus with a 5x turnover requirement, you need to bet a total of 100 x 5 = $500 dollars. Both bets that you win and lose count towards the turnover.

  • Minimum Odds:
Some bets naturally have a much higher chance of winning than others. The easiest bets are usually excluded from bonuses using a minimum odds. Let's say for example that a betting bonus has a minimum odds of +100. Your bet then needs to have +100 or higher odds in order to qualify. You can still place bets under +100, but they will not be using bonus funds or count towards the turnover.

  • Minimum Deposit:
Most betting bonuses have a minimum deposit required to be able to opt-in. If you deposit less, you won't be able to claim the offer. Similarly, the betting site itself might have a minimum deposit, usually because the payment providers charges them a small fee per customer.

  • Minimum/Maximum Bet:
A betting bonus may have a limit for the smallest and/or largest amount of money you can place on a single bet with the bonus funds on your account.

  • Maximum Win:
While rare, it's not unheard of that sportsbooks cap their welcome offers with a maximum win. For this reason, it's not always better to look for the most profitable odds available when playing with a bonus.

  • Expiration Date:
All betting bonuses, promotions and campaigns have an expiration date, usually between 7 and 60 days, depending on the state, type of bonus and sportsbook.

  • Eligble Payment Methods:
For various reasons, such as fees from the provider, not all payment methods are eligible when claiming a betting promotion or bonus. If you want to use a method other than the standard card payments or bank transfers, such as PayPal, you might want to double check the bonus terms and conditions.
